BONABOTO Cries for Good Roads

Mr Peter Lance Adogba Adua, National President of BONABOTO, has expressed concern about the poor pace of development in the Upper East Region. “In fact there is no a single road that is completely tarred… The only road we can boast of is the trunk road leading from Bolgatanga to Paga,” he said.

Mr Adua who was speaking at the 8th National Congress and Home Coming of BONABOTO in Bolgatanga called on the government to help address the infrastructural problems in the Region. He said apart from the dual carriage leading to the Regional hospital, the facility does not exist elsewhere in the town.
Mr Adua said the road that leads from Bolgatanga to Bawku, is a death trap and needs to be re-designed. “The road from Bolgatanga and Zuarungu needs to be expanded to reduce avoidable deaths that occur on it every market day with pedestrians killed or maimed as they compete with vehicles on the narrow road.”

He commended Government for its plan to establish 10 training colleges in each of the regions, adding that the Region could only boast of one such academic facility at Pusiga. Mr Adua said the Region has one of the least literacy rates in the country, recording far less than the national average. He therefore entreated people from the Region who had completed their academic courses and seeking for jobs to return home to help move it forward.

Mr Adua announced that the “Gurune” language had been approved by the Ministry of Education to become an examinable subject at the senior high school and appealed to parliamentarians from the Region to push through the deal to ensure that students write exams in the Language this academic year.

Mr Mark Woyongo, the Regional Minister, who was present at the function noted that the road problems in the area are being addressed particularly Bolgatanga –Bawku, Bolgatanga-Bongo, Winkongo-Tongo roads. He said the Rural Electrification Project is on-going and said about 50 villages in each of the nine districts would benefit from it. Mr Woyongo added that government would open up small scale industries to improve upon the economic livelihood of the people.

The congress which was on the theme:“Fostering Collaboration for the Development of the Upper East Region,” attracted BONABOTO members from all walks of life including those in the Diaspora.
