BONABOTO-USA SOLIDARITY MESSAGE TO THE FIFTH NATIONAL BONABOTO CONGRESS AT BOLGATANGA: DECEMBER 27-31, 2006

We are extremely pleased to take part, through this solidarity message, in the Fifth National BONABOTO Congress taking place at the Catholic Social Center in Bolgatanga. Though separated by distance, we are as emotionally involved as all of you and wishing that this Congress, like previous ones would lead to new courses of action. We hope that this Congress will renew the commitment of all of us to the peace and security of our people and that 2007 will continue to see BONABOTO as the foremost defender of our peoples’ dignity and promoter of their aspirations.

We want to use the opportunity of Congress to congratulate the executive, and indeed, BONABOTO in general, for their great achievements in the inter-congress period. Through your intervention and quiet diplomacy, BONABOTO ensured that the intra-communal conflicts that unfortunately, occurred within some of our communities were contained. We are glad to learn that the various communities have put the past behind them and are living as brothers and sisters.

We support the efforts of BONABOTO in helping to increase access to education for our students through the launching of the BONABOTO Education Assistance Fund (BEAF). We therefore pledge a donation of ten million cedis to the fund. We applaud the transparent manner in which the executive is managing the fund by posting all the information on the internet for all to see. We suggest that disbursement can begin soon to avoid depreciation. Also, if this not been done already, consideration should be given to investing the funds.

For us, thousands of miles away, we would also want to congratulate BONABOTO on what we think is another signal achievement - the establishment of the website. Through the website, we the paweto are able to keep in touch with developments back home. It helps to keep us connected to our roots and reminds us of our duty to our people. Through that we share the joys, anxieties and hopes of our people.

We know that out of this Congress would emerge several pledges and promises; and we strongly agree with the theme of the congress. As we begin to tackle education, let us not forget the other numerous socio-economic problems besieging the BONABOTO area such us poverty, declining agricultural output, environmental degradation, poor health and drug abuse. We hope that any promises that we make here would be accompanied by benchmarks and timelines to enable us measure progress.

Please accept our best wishes for a very successful Congress. We wish to end with our own promise, that 2007 will see a more invigorated BONABOTO-USA. We invite you to hold us to account just as we would hold you too on yours! Ya farafara!!
